Ongoing fundraising for a plaque and expansion of the garden surrounding the Mickey Coffee Pot.
This grassy spot at Old Salem Road and Brookstown Avenue was unanimously voted on
as Resolution #26- 0376, “John Larson
Tranquility Square,” by Winston-Salem’s City Council under the leadership of Council Members Vivian Joiner and Annette Scippio on September 21st, 2026. This recognition of former Winston-Salem city council member John Larson was supported by the neighborhood Old Salem Residents’ Association, Wachovia Historical Society’s Board of Directors, and many Winston-Salem residents.
In addition to his work as a councilman, John spent about 37 years with Old Salem Museums & Gardens. He served as Vice President of Restoration, overseeing meticulous archaeological work and the preservation of Salem’s historic buildings and physical environment. Now, at this fitting spot, home to the Mickey Coffee Pot, John’s decades of devotion as a prominent preservationist, historian, and protector of Winston-Salem’s heritage are permanently cemented.
